About MahjongGuide.com
Our Mission
MahjongGuide.com exists to make Chinese Mahjong accessible to English speakers worldwide. We believe that Mahjong is one of the world's great games β combining strategy, social connection, and cultural richness β and that language should never be a barrier to learning it.
Most Chinese Mahjong resources are written in Chinese, making it difficult for non-Chinese speakers to learn the game. We create comprehensive, beginner-friendly English guides that break down each variant's rules, scoring, and strategy in clear, simple language.
What We Cover
We currently provide complete guides for five popular Chinese Mahjong variants:
- Hongzhong Mahjong β The easiest variant, with wild card mechanics
- Guangdong Mahjong β Fast-paced Cantonese variant with Chicken Hu rules
- Sichuan Mahjong β Strategic Blood Battle variant with suit restriction
- Tuidaohu Mahjong β The simplest variant, perfect for absolute beginners
- Guobiao Mahjong β China's official competitive standard
Each guide includes detailed rules, tile explanations, winning conditions, scoring systems, common patterns, strategic tips, and frequently asked questions β all written with the English-speaking beginner in mind.
Our Approach
- Plain English: We avoid jargon and explain Mahjong terms with both English translations and pinyin romanization, so you can learn the Chinese terminology gradually.
- Beginner-first: Every guide assumes zero prior knowledge. If you've never touched a Mahjong tile, you're in the right place.
- Progressive difficulty: We recommend a learning path from easiest to hardest, so each variant builds on skills from the previous one.
- Cultural context: We include cultural notes about where each variant is played and why it matters to the people who play it.
